Collector of Perceptions and Memories
In such a weary period as the present, to
discover an artist able to materialize ideas is like
suddenly finding a source of hope. That is the feeling experienced when discovering the most
recent artwork by Heriberto Nieves.
When we contemplate his work, we can appreciate his capacity to surprise us by creating such
a polyvalent body of work. He has used technical resources derived from a refined education
in order to challenge the critical eye with artworks that are simultaneous painting, sculpture,
installation, and what could become a surprising scenography.
In his work, there are foreshadowing that suggest places where the epic of the future will
occur. He confronts us with distant realities that are perceived today as if we were
predestinated to find the grounds of that inevitable future. Although perhaps, as Moses before
the Promised Land, our
generation could only observe it from distance. To create such
emotions, he reinterprets states of being nourish by tradition, with the purpose of giving, to
those who try to understand his work, a reliable foundation for them to project themselves
towards the unknown. The artist benefits from astronomic discoveries that delimit modernity
without loosing contact with the astrological substrate coming from ancient beliefs, which
many people exist with in the present.
Prof. José Pérez Ruiz, AICA
The Burning Heart of the Universe
In his work, Nieves frequently uses round forms such as moons to suggest the constant,
natural cycles of life as a metaphor for cyclic time, continuous change and new beginnings,
like the passage of the days, the monthly progression of the moon, the fresh beginnings in
human lives. The passing of time is a beautiful process, adding new layers of experience to
our existence. We reach the new beginnings, we are about to renew ourselves.
Marita Muukkonen

Helsinki, June 2000
His recent work seems to recuperate the sculptural sense of the Visual Experimentation group of the seventies, integrated by artists of the South American avant-garde. This is good because it acknowledges that an American familiarity exists in Europe so much as that rooted group in Paris, conquered by Heriberto Nieves. But the “small image from heaven” go beyond the material combinations and the rupture with the plane, because they bring out the diverse qualities of various intonations and movements of the planes, to make us understand the universe as a provider of lively, delightful, and dynamic structures.

Heriberto Nieves uses materials and building procedures derived from the steel industry along with traditional plastic arts techniques from painting and sculpture. The fusion of the two gives rise to a monumental manifestation of plasticity that has great visual impact while remaining on the margin of the scale. In forcing the constructive mediums to obey his creative will, Heriberto Nieves expresses his preoccupations, joys and thoughts in propitiatory images of the human spirit.
