Sánchez is inspired and driven by the visual banquet that everyday life offers him.
His developing aesthetic includes a cast of figurative characters that are a repository for characteristics and motivations that Sánchez sees played out in his observations of daily life.
His main characters, including a self-referential robed figure, continue to move in and out of the subconscious to express themselves in vivid color. They grapple with loneliness, phobias, confinement, freedom, terror, and the appearance of hope. Within the sparse
Eastern-influenced landscapes that form many of Sánchez’s backdrops, these figures circulate in an unending narrative, a chronic state of possibility and flux that is the human condition.

Edgar Sánchez Cumbas was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1971. He has also lived in New York, Atlanta, South Carolina, and Delaware. The nomadic lifestyle of his childhood years helped ensure that Sánchez would develop the keen observation skills needed to adapt to constantly changing surroundings.
Continuous exposure to new sights and environments, while exciting, is also stressful, and pressed Sánchez to explore his own inner landscape and plumb it for the rich narratives he would employ to entertain himself during solitary childhood afternoons and much later in the fictional scenarios that unfold from his memory onto the picture plane. Sánchez obtained a B.F.A. in Illustration in the Savannah College of Art & Design and a A.A. in Liberal Arts in the Hillborough Community College. |
