ARTIST PROFILE

Just like the exegete decodes the messages between the verses of the Holy Scriptures, in the same way Angel Rivera seeks to decipher the message that lies hidden between the fibers of his immediate settings with the intention of understanding how the forces that control the universal system work.

The painter theorizes that reality can be recreated, articulating pigments and that the mysteries of the physical world can be understood manipulating substances that mature the surface of a canvas. Each color is representative of a specific element. Water, light and heat interact with each other evoking various landscapes. They turn into natural scenes lacking objective traits. These landscapes are presented as dreams that dwell in the subconscious and talk to us about visions that defy logic and reason.

It is precise to depart from chaos and control accidents time and time again with waters of different densities. Layer after layer the stratums that compose these landscapes are created; just like water opens the path between the rocks, sculpting the figures that are more interesting. Low relief emerges as rocks and mountains, rivers of color flood valleys of fantasy and fine transparencies speak of luminous fumes creating atmospheric depth.

It is one way of painting that interprets the processes that occur infintely in the space in which we inhabit. A pictorial investigation that seeks to understand the divine message whispered to us by our landscape.

Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1981. In 2005 he obtained a Bachelor in Arts concentrating in Painting from the University of Puerto Rico. Angel Rivera is a young artist that has developed into one of the most dedicated and consistent artists of his generation. His great deeds are beyond comparison. He has worked uninterruptedly for the last seven years. At his age, there are few that possess an ability to work similar to one of an acclaimed or mature artist, which makes me think that his commitment is undeniable.

Angel Rivera understands the strengths and creative possibilities in intuition. It is evident that his work is a departure from the arbitrary limitations that are imposed on us. His intellectual evolution runs parallel to the development of the handling of the visual arts in his work. This has provided him with a clear perception of what his work should be. It’s because of this that we will find in his paintings images that on ocassion are shown to be violent or apocalyptic, but in essence are filled with a lyriscism with mystical character. A great amount of his paintings convey a mystic strength from which is difficult to escape. This quality is the net gain of the path that Rivera has provided in search of clues that his landscape, or better to say, our landscape is constantly transmitting us.

It fell unto our artist Angel Rivera to outline through proper “abstraction” languages experiences that makes us sway between the strength and deepness of his content and his excellent achievements of his handling of the medium. His paintings speak to us. They approach us. They won’t let us keep going without being appreciated.
